Classification
Anticoagulants, Antithrombotics & Fibrinolytics
Indications
Coronary occlusion, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, peripheral vascular thromboembolic states.
Dosage
Initially 5-10 mg daily, according to age & body wt & adjusted w/ relation to results of daily control tests until the desired level of anticoagulant activiity is achieved usually 3-6 days after initiation of treatment.
Contraindications
Severe hepatic or renal disease, actual or potential hemorrhagic conditions, pregnancy, severe hypertension; endocarditis, GI & urinary tract ulcerations, visceral carcinoma, neurosurgery, recent eye, brain or spinal cord surgery.
Adverse Reactions
Alopecia, skin rashes of various kinds, hemorrhagic skin necrosis.
Interactions
Drugs that affect prothrombin time eg analgesics, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, diuretics.
